Design in Cultural Context:

Hospitality Design
Description: Using the platform of luxury resort design, we investigated how the history, music, art, food, landscape, and numerous other cultural attributes of a place can lead to specific design solutions which lead users to a greater understanding of a locale, its people, and its place in the world so that they might better understand their own. This approach presupposes that when appropriately used, the cultural context provides more than just a “vacation” but rather an everlasting impression (perhaps even an “education”) - and that is an appropriate goal of design.
Our group was assigned the island of Bermuda as a site for our Park Hyatt Hotel. Our site, which is currently host to a Regis hotel and a Golf course, served as an exciting problem to figure out with the extensive program requirements.
