The Fire Station
Description: Design a replacement station for the James Robinson Central Fire Station on Ferdinand Street in St Francisville, Louisiana. A major aim is to increase the visibility of the fire department and the vital role it plays in the community.
This is a project about bringing the St. Francisville community together. The existing fire station sits in a prominent area of the town on Ferdinand Street, adjacent to the Town Hall. Across the street and along the road are many shops that bring much foot traffic. With its peaceful streets and inviting porches, you can sense a great deal of pride.
Yet, the fire station as is does not connect with the larger community because of its lack of a prominent community space that unifies the town's spirit into one centralized building. The site's proximity to Shops, Residential homes, and the Town Hall makes it an ideal location for serving a more significant function than just a fires station. It could offer opportunities for large social gatherings spanning from a school field trip to a voting day facility.
The fire station design creates an efficient working apparatus bay and support rooms for firefighters while prioritizing the community it wishes to protect and serve. The double-height volume on the St. Ferdinand Street facade aims to serve as a landmark for the community that solidifies the Fire Station within the community. These design decisions would allow the fire station to add to the strong sense of connection in the town.
